Maj9 chords develop their sound from maj7 chords, and they can be subsitituted by each other freely.

Your fingers need to get used to the given chord shapes, but with time, they will automatically form the shape naturally.
Notice that the root note of a chord will be it's main, and lowest note. However, this will not be true for chord inversions.
